Chapter Fifteen

“So come to Sunday dinner.” Ace’s voice was firm. “I just said Strega Nonna would love to see you, long as you don’t let on you know what Famiglia Giuliano is under all the traditional Italian shit.”

Cherish frowned. It had taken her a couple of days to marshal up the balls to call him so she sure as shit wasn’t ready to face his whole family. Nor could she leave her coven while the threat of the Point hung over the whole Cove. “I can’t go anywhere, Ace, not right now. We’re having some weird problems up here. After that, yeah, absofreakinglutely, I’m down for your Nonna’s ravioli.”

“Weird how?”

Cherish could hear phones and clicking keyboards in the background. “You don’t want me going into it while you’re at work, Ace. You don’t. Come up this weekend and I’ll show you. Or the Point will. My coven is on it, but having some outside eyes on the situation can’t hurt.”

“Trust me?”

“Partner, I’ve trusted you with my life and you’ve trusted me with yours. After that, this kind of weird shit is cake.” Cherish’s voice took on a slight tremble that made her flush with shame. She didn’t do scared, not ever, and she was terrified. She had noticed that since the rage was less, the panic and fear was worse. She’d preferred the rage, but not what came with it. Part of the Point lodged in her auric body, fuck. Terrifying.

“Good point. I’ll drive up Friday morning. I’m nights this week, just finishing up paperwork before I go home, and then I’m off Friday morning for the weekend. Anything to know before I come up?”

Cherish considered everything that had happened in the past four days, and wondered how she’d put it into words. She couldn’t. She just sighed.

“That bad?” Ace’s voice was quiet, thoughtful.

Cherish nodded, then smacked her forehead with the realization he couldn’t see agreement over the phone. “Yes. As bad as it gets. Bring protection. Not sure how it’ll hit you, you being an outsider and all.”

Ace laughed then, the background noises growing faint, then vanishing. “OK, I just shut the interview room door to say this. Multi-generational family trad witch, Bark. Not exactly vulnerable.”

Cherish’s grunt of laughter answered his. “I promise you’ve seen nothing like this, Ace. Nothing. Wouldn’t hurt to hit any family grimoires you have laying about and looking for a cyclical energy spike, tied to Samhain. Anything you can find will help us.” She paused, sighed again, and closed her eyes. “I almost killed Murph.”

“What the actual fuck?” Ace sputtered. “You gotta give me more than that.”

“The energy influenced me. Or something. And, look, come up this weekend. Easier to show than tell with this shit. And I can’t tell this story without seeing your ugly mug in person.”

“OK. Friday morning. I’ll get off shift, drive up in the morning instead of sleeping first and driving the expressway in rush hour traffic. Gotta room for me?”

Cherish burst out laughing then. “Oh, Murph will love you staying with me, but yeah, yeah I do.
